(Politics)Benghazi Witnesses a Fresh Wave of Libyan Protests

There are fears that Libya may be broken up into a number of smaller states.

Benghazi, the city in the east of Libya where the uprising against former leader Muammar Gaddafi began, is again witnessing protests and the stirrings of discontent. Gaddafi may have been killed, and the population may be free from his supposedly tyrannical rule, but these developments could just be the start of the countrys problems.

Demonstrators are now gathering in Benghazi holding the flag of eastern Libya and calling for local rule. Other regions are also calling for autonomy, but the situation in Benghazi is more developed, and also more worrying for Western powers. Eastern Libya is home to many of Libyas oil fields, so it is extremely significant politically. To highlight this issue, one of the leaders of Benghazis new protest movement said that if their demands are not met, they may be forced to stop oil flow.

Larbi Sadiki, a professor of Middle East Studies at Britains Exeter University, has criticized Libyas new leaders, the National Transitional Council (NTC). The NTC has not been reaching out to the Libyan heart. It is disorderlyK All kinds of demands are being made on this government and it is not being responsive to it.
