School authorities in Yunnan, China have commissioned an investigation into a subsidized school meals service. The decision comes after hundreds of children across the province were hospitalized with suspected food poisoning. Possible food poisoning cases have been reported at three schools, but the most worrying incidents took place at Dingla Primary School in Zhenxiong County, where a third of the 1,000 students were taken to hospital.

The Yunnan Education Department posted a statement on its website saying that the schools canteen was operated by a private catering company. The department dismissed the caterers and criticized them, saying that they did not own a refrigerated truck and did not keep food in an air-conditioned room. The company is also accused of leaving ingredients on the ground in all kinds of weather.

A public relations official from the Zhenxiong government spoke about the subsidized meal system, noting that schools in economically disadvantaged areas like our county usually lack the infrastructure and management experience to run such a project. He called on the national government to give more money to schools so that they can improve their cooking facilities.
