Rita:
Jasper:
(International)Two Mothers Fight for Parental Rights in the US
A female same-sex couple in Florida took an egg of one of the partners, combined it with a sperm from a donor through in vitro fertilization, and implanted it in the uterus of another person, who gave birth to a baby girl. When the child was two years old, the surrogate mother who gave birth, left with the child. The other mother found them through a private detective and fought for parental rights. According to a Florida law promulgated in 1993, the surrogate mother who was pregnant for nine months is the mother. However, the mother who donated the egg is biologically related to the child. Consequently, the case has triggered public debate, and may possibly cause the state government to review their laws and regulations.
Dialogue Example:
(Society)Rita and Jasper are discussing modern phenomenon in society. Lets listen to their conversation!
Rita: Did you know that being a surrogate mother has become a popular job in China?
Jasper: Yeah, because many people want dragon babies, but they are infertile.
Rita: The improved technology has surely helped a lot of these people. In vitro fertilization has also allowed same-sex couples to have children.
Jasper: Right, but when same-sex couples break up, determining parental rights may be difficult.
Rita: True, it can really become a problem. Hopefully they can have a happy ending like the female same-sex couple in The Kids are All Right.
Jasper: Yes, but real life is different.
Rita: Yeah, the times are really different now, but the law should also keep up and ensure the rights of both moms or both dads.
Jasper:Well said. However, I think Taiwan should take the first step and legalize same-sex marriage!
