Diverse ecological resources in Penghu area provide tremendous potential for tourism and recreation development. Striving for a balance between development and sustainability, the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration aims to promote a new type of tourism: volunteer travel –a combination of volunteer service and leisure activities, which is rapidly gaining global popularities in recent years. Volunteer travel allows participants to replace regular consumer entertainment with work service. Participating volunteers can not only experience the local culture and natural environments, but also take part in the island ecological conservation work. Such service can also motivate and raise local residents’ awareness of community development and ecology conservation.

In 2015, Penghu National Scenic Area Administration entrusts the National Penghu University of Science and Technology with the task of holding two sessions of “Volunteer Travel in Penghu area” choosing Shili as the venue of this year’s volunteer travel destination and to host international volunteers who wish to not only enjoy the exotic beach holidays but also contribute to community revitalization and ecology conservation. Shili community is one of the best examples that showcase the traditional fishing village culture in Penghu. Over the years, the popularity of Shili beach has gradually faded because several other beach destinations in Penghu also attract visitors’ attention. One of the objectives of the volunteer travel project is to bring international volunteers to Shili and so they could experience the unique beauty of the community themselves. It is hoped this Volunteer Travel project will be the new chapter in Shili community’s effort to regain its former glory.

The first session (July 2nd ~ 8th) has successfully concluded. Participants experienced village fishing culture and assisted the local residents in creating community installation art drawing upon community’s everyday experiences.

Now, the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration continues the recruitment of volunteers for the second session starting from October 2nd to October 8th and is inviting interested individuals to join. Eligibility: Foreign passport holders, Non-Republic of China (Taiwan) citizens, 18 or older. To sign up, go to
