National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) hosted a banquet serving groupers, shrimps, orchid noodles and local cuisine to treat more than 80 local government officials and social workers from An-Nan District, Tainan City, on April 30.

The banquet features the university’s recent R&D results in smart farming and breeding of groupers, shrimps and orchid.

NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su said, “We are fully aware of our responsibility and we are very critical to the city and citizens. So we’d like to maximize the potential and to explore more possibility as key designer, key innovator or key engine for the city’s future transformation.”

“Social responsibility and engagement are two of the fundamental values shared by all members of the NCKU community, she added.

Tainan City Mayor Ching-Te Lai said, it is not usual that university scholars are willing to devote their research to the general public. NCKU as the most important academic institute has made great contribution to the people in Tainan.

He expressed his gratitude to this grand gesture of sharing from the university.

The Professors from the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology briefed the participants on the university’s major academic research in orchids, shrimps, groupers and many more results from collaborative academic-industry partnerships.

College of Bioscience and Biotechnology Dean Chu-Fang Lo and her team have cultivated a black tiger shrimp that is resistant to the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in a collaborative study with OSO Organic Shrimp Farm, a black tiger shrimp enterprise established in Madagascar by the largest aquatic product distributor in France.

Also, the university has partnered with the major power management supplier Delta Electronics Inc. to establish a research and development center for fish farming, located at Annan Campus. One of their first projects is to cultivate a type of shrimp.

Prof.Tsung-Yueh Chen offered insight into the grouper nervous necrosis (GNN) virus and might provide Taiwanese aquaculture a chance to flourish again.

Also, in order to promote healthy lifestyle, NCKU Hospital set up a health care station to provide their services including cancer screening, diet counseling, and smoking cessation.

An-Nan campus with a total area of 73 hectares is designated primarily to provide buildings and facilities for industrial-educational cooperation and training programs.

The buildings and facilities on An-Nan campus include the Hydraulic Model Experimental Field, the administrative building of NCKU Research and Services Headquarters (RSH), NCKU Environmental Resources Research Administration Center, a resource recycling plant, a fishery experimental laboratory and a hydraulic water quality laboratory.

The hydraulic experimental field has the largest wave basin and wave flume in the world. The Headquarters works to facilitate the development of industry-government-university collaboration.

The recycling plant serves to help manage the disposal of experimental materials from schools of all levels across the nation.
