(Local) NHIA Reports Patients Overly Reliant On Emergency Services

The National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) has released data showing that Taiwanese are overly reliant on the use of emergency services.

An approximate 18,000 people per day are treated at emergency medical care facilities, and the result has led to longer waiting room times and increased pressure on resources. 6.86 million people used emergency room services last year, with a total of 1.86 million choosing hospital services over clinics.

The most crowded emergency room is Taichung Veterans Hospital, which has an approximate 9.28 percent of patients with waiting times of 48 hours for treatment. This is closely followed by National Taiwan University Hospital, with a rate of 7.69 percent, and Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, with 6.38 percent of its patients waiting 48 hours. Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital rounded out the list of the top five hospitals with the longest waiting periods.

Lee Wei-chiang, head of the Ministry of Health and Welfares Department of Medical Affairs, stated that a five-level rating system for emergency cases (with one being the most emergent and 5 being the least) has been introduced this year and should help alleviate the problem and allow for the acutely ill to be treated first.

Patients with non-emergent needs are asked to deal with primary healthcare centers in order to reduce the strain on emergency care facilities.
