As top US universities surge ahead, British universities continue to slip in global reputation rankings.

Based on the 2014 Times Higher World Reputation Rankings, UK institutions are losing ground to US counterparts. For the second year in a row, Harvard has been named as the top university in the world, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford. According to the report, these American superbrands currently stand head and shoulders above the rest in terms of global reputation.

On the other hand, although Cambridge and Oxford still made fourth and fifth place respectively, other UK universities appear to be struggling. Within the top 100, several British universities have seen their position decline. This supports the recent claim that a lack of state investment in British higher education is leaving universities struggling to keep up with those elsewhere in the world.

The rankings are compiled from a survey of more than ten thousand senior academics in 150 countries who were asked to name the most influential universities in the world. The authors insist that global reputation is crucial for attracting top staff and students, as well as collaborations and benefactions in a highly competitive market.
