(Health) Easy Solution to Stage Fright
Are you sick of getting sweaty palms, an upset stomach, a shaky voice and a feeling of panic every time you perform or speak in front of an audience? Here is an easy solution V excitement.
A new study suggests that it is better to get excited than try to stay calm when dealing with performance anxiety. Researchers at Harvard Business School recently conducted a number of experiments to see whether peoples feelings had an impact on their performance when asked to do stressful tasks, such as taking a test and delivering a speech. It was found that participants who engaged in self-talk with phrases like I am excited, instead of trying to talk themselves into a calmer state, generally performed better.
Commenting on the findings, the researchers said that it might be easier for people to view anxiety as excitement since they are both states of high arousal. They concluded that becoming excited is a more effective way to manage anxiety and improve their performance for people are forced to think about the potential opportunities, rather than dwell on the potential threats. Additionally, study author Alison Wood Brooks also encouraged people to say they are excited out loud, even if they do not believe it at first, as it can increase authentic feelings of excitement.
