(Politics) Australia East Timor Dispute Over Oil And Gas Documents
East Timor announced plans to ask an international court in the Netherlands to order Australia to return documents Australian secret service police seized. The documents relate to oil and gas revenue-sharing between the two countries.
The Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) obtained the documents from the homes of both a lawyer and former spy in Canberra, Australia. Agio Pereira, East Timorese Minister of State, alleges that the Australian government bugged the East Timorese Cabinet ahead of oil and gas revenue sharing negotiations and listened to confidential discussions, to which end the former spy was set to testify to in court.
Pereira issued a statement with his plans to ask the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague for an interim order that would require Australia to hand over the documents to the court. According to Pereira, the documents challenge the validity of a bilateral treaty the two countries signed in 2006 regarding billions of US dollars in oil and gas reserves. The agreement was reached after East Timor broke away from Indonesia in a 1999 UN sanctioned independence ballot.
