(Travel) New Budget Airlines Planned for 2014
Taiwan is set to launch two new budget airlines next year.
As demand for discount flying grows in Asia, airlines are eager to tap into the lucrative market. Taiwans first private airline TransAsia Airways recently announced plans to spend around NT$3 billion on setting up the countrys first locally based budget airline. According to the company, it expects to begin services by the end of 2014, with the hope of completely catering to the needs and expectations of the Taiwanese people.
On the other hand, China Airlines, Taiwans leading airline by fleet size, has also teamed up with Singapore-based carrier Tigerair to form a new budget carrier in Taiwan. Commenting on the joint venture, chairman of China Airlines Sun Hung-Hsiang is confident that China Airlines knowledge of the Taiwan market along with Tigerairs expertise in the no-frills sector will drive up demand in the countrys civil aviation market.
Singapores Jetstar Asia was the first budget carrier to begin operating in Taiwan in 2004. Since its launch, low-cost airlines have grown significantly in popularity and scope, with Taiwan now being host to 13 budget carriers.
