(International) Ice And Snow Cause Damage, Deaths in US
A cold snap covering large areas of the US has reportedly caused several deaths and left people without power in frigid winter temperatures.
Four people from California died of hypothermia in the San Francisco Bay Area, and many traffic related deaths have also been blamed on icy roads and treacherous driving conditions.
An estimated 75,000 customers in the Dallas area were without power recently, and other power outages estimated to be around 7,500 in number were reported across the state and in western Arkansas.
Road accidents on Interstate 35 north of Dallas caused traffic delays of up to four hours, and vehicles were stalled or unable to climb hills in icy conditions. The storm also affected air traffic in and out of many airports, causing Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to cancel 400 departing flights V leaving about 3,330 passengers to stay overnight in terminals. The airport stated it was running at about half the usual schedule as a result of weather conditions, which seem unlikely to improve soon.
Temperatures in Montana and South Dakota dropped to -29 Celsius on Saturday, and the icy storm is predicted to hit Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic next.
