(Business) Government Revises Down Growth Forecasts

Even though the global economy is gradually bouncing back, Taiwans economy does not look too promising.

The Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) has recently announced that Taiwans GDP growth forecast has been revised downward. It is expected that the country will see 1.74 percent growth in GDP this year, down from a previous estimate of 2.31 percent, with GDP per capita forecast at US$20,850.

According to DGBAS Minister Shih Su-mei, the downward GDP adjustment is mainly attributed to a drop in exports. In spite of gradual economic recovery around the world, market demand and prices of panels have decreased, causing exports to take a hit. Moreover, with the petrochemical industry performing its annual maintenance and competition across the strait growing steadily, Taiwans exports are likely to be overestimated.

In regard to private consumption, it is expected to rise 2.01 percent in the fourth quarter, with car dealers forecast to push for stronger sales. Meanwhile, private investment is poised to climb 5.32 percent this year, as semiconductor businesses continue to make advanced manufacturing investments, telecommunication businesses continue to invest in 4G technology construction, and airliners plan to acquire new aircraft.
