(Health) Taking Food Safety into Your Own Hands
Food safety has recently become the most pressing issue to Taiwanese people. With problems being found with the products of several major food manufacturers, it has become apparent that the national food control system is severely flawed. The outdated laws along with outdated inspection standards have led Taiwans food processing industry to become a hotbed of unscrupulous business owners.
A large proportion of Taiwanese people like to eat out. However, with many restaurants and food stalls going to great lengths to cut costs, it is difficult to ensure that the food served comes from an approved source. In addition, the washing and preservation of food, whether or not low grade oil or cheap flavoring additives have been used, and the hygiene of silverware and kitchen equipment are also hidden issues regarding the food sold outside.
If you want to feel safe about what you eat and drink, it is best that you cook at home instead of eating out. When shopping for groceries, be careful with your selections. Avoid buying processed foods, and try to replace meat with vegetables. When cooking, limit your use of oil, salt and condiments so that you will be more at ease with what you eat.
