(Life) Battle of the Best Soft-Serve Ice Cream

Even though winter is just around the corner, the cold war between Taiwans two major convenience stores continues to heat up.

Amid a growing soft-serve ice cream craze across Taiwan, giant retailers 7-Eleven and FamilyMart are battling it out over a frozen dessert market worth NT$4 billion a year. According to President Chain Store Corp., operator of the 7-Eleven chain in Taiwan, 100,000 servings of soft-serve ice cream have been sold since its Hokkaido-imported ice cream made its debut last month. Meanwhile, FamilyMart, which introduced Japanese soft-serve in March, has so far sold about 5 million servings.

Although temperatures have begun to drop, 7-Eleven remains confident in its ice cream campaign for dairy products, including ice cream, sell better in Hokkaido in the winter than the summer. In fact, the 7-Eleven cold sweet has become so popular that customers sometimes need to take a number and wait up to an hour.

Not to be outdone in promotional efforts by 7-Eleven, FamilyMart also introduced a new chocolate flavor recently, drawing a largely positive response. It says it hopes to double the number of stores serving soft-serve ice cream across Taiwan by the end of the year.
