(Health) Coke May Cause Cancer
A series of problems related to food safety have broken out recently. Not only are there problems with cooking oil and beef, concerns over young peoples all-time favorite drink, Coke, have also been raised.
Results from the inspection conducted by Taipei City Governments Department of Health shows that the levels of 4-methylimidazole (4-MI) in caramel color used to make colas have exceeded overseas limits by over 93%. Since 4-MI has been proven to be a carcinogen, the colas produced in the US have long had their recipes modified. Nevertheless, the ones in Taiwan are still being produced using the old recipe. This clearly shows that Taiwanese consumers rights and interests are far less protected compared to those in the US.
The fact that the regulations in Taiwan regarding food safety are considerably out of date and that the government has long turned a blind eye to the problem has caused a staggering number of food safety issues to surface. For those who want to be able to feel comfortable with what they eat, they will just have to count on themselves and keep their fingers crossed.
