然而，不是每個人都對此工程感到滿意。對於批判者來說，這斥資40億元的隧道，代表了成本超支、延遲以及總理塔伊普比天高的野心。馬爾馬雷建在距離北安那托利亞活斷層20公里的淤泥海床上，這意味著若有大地震發生的話，通勤者的人身安全將有極大風險。然而，交通部長畢那利已經保證這個隧道將能承受規模九的地震。

(International) Turkey Unveils Worlds First Underwater Rail Link

The breakthrough rail link will connect Asia and Europe.

The worlds first underwater rail between Asia and Europe was recently opened in Turkey in fulfillment of Ottoman sultans dream from over a century ago. The rail, dubbed geographys junction between East and West, spans 13 km to join Europe and Asia some 60 meters below the Bosphorus Strait.

Named the Marmaray, the engineering feat will carry around 1 million passengers per day and shorten travel time between the two sides of the Bosphorus to four minutes. It aims to ease congestion in a populous city with 16 million people, bind the two continents closer, and ultimately form part of a trade route between Europe and China.

However, not everyone is pleased about the project. For critics, the $4 billion tunnel is a reminder of cost overruns, delays and the soaring ambition of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. The fact that the Marmaray is set on a silty seabed 20km from the active North Anatolian Fault means commuters lives would be put at great risk if a large earthquake were to strike. Nevertheless, Transport Minister Binali Yildirim has assured that the tunnel can withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.
