(Travel) The Dizzying Heights of Meteora

Dizzying towers of rock soar above Greeces northern plains and support centuries-old monasteries.

Greece is a country full of incredible sights and breathtaking scenery, but theres surely nothing more spectacular than the monasteries balanced on top of spires of rock in the countrys northwestern regions. The monasteries are a Unesco World Heritage Site, and they're known as Meteora, which means suspended in the air. No one is quite sure how the massive pillars of rock were formed, but it is thought that people started to live there in the 9th Century.

Six of Meteoras monasteries are still used, and of them, the Monastery of the Great Meteoron is the oldest, largest, and highest up. It was established in the 14th Century, and its rich heritage is apparent everywhere you look. As with the rest of the monasteries, its not easy to get to. But your efforts will be rewarded, as the views, along with the monastery itself, are sumptuous.

It seems incredible that people live up here and have managed to build on these rocky towers, but theres no denying that the area is spectacular. As one of the nuns who lives there explained: This is a place where lots of saints have lived and I have always been in awe of the area. Somehow being up here makes me think my prayers will reach God much more quickly.
