Following in the footsteps of Apple and Amazon, the tech giant has also entered the lucrative market.

Google is the latest internet mega-player to join e-education. According to a report from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price of standard textbooks has increased more than eightfold over the past three decades. In an attempt to help students lighten schoolbags and cut down expenses, Google now offers a simple alternative V buying or renting books online.

The app, available on Google Play, offers a selection of textbooks from the catalogues of major educational publishers, including Pearson and McGraw-Hilland Macmillan. The books are available for both iPhone and Android users, and can be bought or rented at prices up to 80% lower than the paper publications.

Googles arrival at the scene is not surprising for e-education is a market that is expanding rapidly. However, tech titans will have to go beyond mere digitalization of paper texts. They must take steps to share the content and capitalize on the opportunities that digital platforms provide in order to make a noticeable impact on education.
