(Technology) Cassette Tapes Live on

Thought your old mix-tape was obsolete? Think again!

Cassette tapes may not be commonly used for music listening, but that doesnt mean they are not being used. In fact, they are used much more than people may think. Cassettes are still considered a safe, reliable means of cheap, secure storage for things such as patient records and video archives.

Even IBM is trying to keep cassettes alive as a green storage technology alternative to power-hungry hard drives. In Zurich, Evangelos Eleftheriou and his colleagues at IBM have developed a cassette, measuring 10 cm by 10 cm by 2cm that can hold about 35 terabytes of data. They believe they can increase the storage capacity to 100 billion bits per square inch. It may even be used in the worlds biggest data collection project. Known as SKA (Square Kilometre Array), this radio telescope project will start scanning the skies in just over ten years.

Because many businesses dont need real time access to everything, storage on cassette looks promising and may just make a comeback.
