Amsterdams Marijuana shops, which attract millions of tourists each year, were pleased to hear that mayor Eberhard van der Laan plans to get rid of the proposed ban on tourists visiting their shops.

The Netherlands has a reputation for tolerating soft drugs, and there are currently more than 700 shops that sell marijuana to both locals and tourists.

Previously, the conservative government had planned to ban foreigners beginning next year, but businesses have been protesting the change due to the high number of tourists they attract.

Many shop advocates are against the ban, stating that not only will they lose business, but it will also encourage illegal sales from street dealers and possibly push up crime rates.

The issue is still being debated. A spokeswoman was quoted as saying, The coalition agreement says that tourists will be banned from coffee shops in the country. What accommodation there will be for local requirements has not yet been finalized.
