(Culture) Remembrance Day Ceremonies Optional in Canada
Remembrance Day is a day for commemorating the sacrifices Canadian troops have made for Canada. While most Canadians are happy to pin on a red poppy in honor of Remembrance Day, there are some who choose not to participate in local school activities.
Edmonton Public Schools spokeswoman Jane Sterling said, Sometimes its due to religious belief, sometimes they might have had a death in the family, among other reasons.
Not all veterans and school officials, however, are pleased with this decision, voicing the opinion that troops give their lives to protect all Canadians, and that religion is a separate issue.
Decisions to opt out are considered on a case by case basis, with the majority of the students not taking the option. Some parents, however, do prefer their children not attend and have made requests with the schools. Students who dont attend Remembrance Day ceremonies are required to stay in school and wait in silence.
