(Business) Hong Kong Remains Worlds Freest Economy
Hong Kong remains the worlds freest economy, according to a recent report by the Cato Institute.
Among 144 countries and economies, Hong Kong offers the highest level of economic freedom, followed by Singapore and New Zealand. Hong Kongs commitment to free-market principles, as well as the rule of law, has facilitated our emergence as a leading international financial, trade and logistics center, commented Donald Tong, Hong Kong Commissioner for Economic and Trade Affairs, USA.
On the other hand, Taiwan ranks 15th on the list, up 15 places from last year and making it the highest ranking received in history. The significant jump is mainly due to improved marks for gradual relaxation of restrictions on foreigners ownership rights and investment, business administration cost reduction, government spending and state-run enterprises.
What is noteworthy is that the US, the worlds largest economy, only places 16th, and China, the worlds second largest economy, is ranked 107th on the list.
