(Local)The Revival of Kung Fu
While China has risen as an international power over the past few decades, the legendary Shaolin Temple, long renowned for its association with Chinese martial arts, has also spawned a lucrative kung fu training industry.
Shaolin village, which surrounds the temple, is a veritable kung fu factory, having some 60 martial arts academies and more than 50,000 students in total. The village expanded vastly after the revival of interest in Shaolin kung fu triggered by the 1970s television series Kung Fu.
Students from every province and social class, ranging in age from 5 to their late 20s, travel to Shaolin to uphold the ancient traditions, enduring years of discipline and a lot of pain for their dreams. Some arrive in the hope of becoming movie stars, while others come to learn skills that will guarantee good jobs in the military, police or private security. There are also a few sent by their parents to learn obedience and hard work.
