(Business)Saab Sold to Swedish-Chinese Backers

The new owners will convert the company into a maker of electric cars.

Carmaker Saab has been sold to an investment group led by Swedish and Chinese backers. The companys new owners, National Electric Vehicle Sweden (Nevs), have said they want to turn the firm into an electric vehicle manufacturer. No details were released about how much the troubled carmaker had been sold for.

Saab was declared bankrupt in December last year and had debts of 13 billion kronor (US$1.8 billion). The company was once owned by General Motors, which bought a 50% stake in the firm in 1989 and took complete control eleven years later. The company was selling as many as 133,000 cars a year by 2006. However, its fortunes took a turn for the worse after that and sold only 27,000 vehicles in 2009.

General Motors sold the company to the Dutch group Spyker in 2009, but Saab has continued to flounder since then. Saab currently employs around 30,000 people, and it was unclear how many of those will be kept by the new owners. Nevs does plan to invest in electric car manufacturing technology at Saabs Trollhattan base.
