(International)Divisions Mark Rio+20 Build Up
Nations are struggling to agree on provisions that would make our world safer and fairer.
The Rio+20 Summit begins this week, and it has been described as a rare opportunity for world leaders to close the rich-poor divide and make the global economy more sustainable. However, negotiations that took place last week highlighted how difficult it will be for nations to agree on the most important issues.
A draft agreement has already been written and is entitled The Future We Want. It contains provisions to improve food, energy, and water security in poor countries. It also seeks to slowly eliminate fossil fuel subsidies and increase levels of protection for the worlds oceans. The only problem is that, as of June 13, only 20% of the draft had been agreed. Western nations and developing countries were unwilling to accept rules that might hurt their economies.
After witnessing the problems, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev hit out at the worlds current leaders. I feel bitter when I look at the cavernous gulf between rich and poor, the irresponsibility that caused the global financial crisis, the weak and divided responses to climate changeK. The opportunity to build a safer, fairer and more united world has been largely squandered.
