(Travel)A Focus on Poverty Tourism
It can be damaging or helpful, and it all depends on the people operating the tour.
Over the last decade, tour groups offering trips into slums or poor, remote settings have grown in number. Poverty tourism allows tourists a chance to look at a different side of life V to see how people with little money survive and enjoy life. With the rise in popularity, however, many are questioning whether these trips exploit poor people.
According to Tricia Barnett, the former director of a charity working against tourism exploitation, these trips can be exploitative. She says its important to look at whether the local community receives any of the money tour operators get paid. Before you go on a trip, its advised that you ask the company what they do to help people in the local community. If they dont do anything, then find another organizer.
Barnett says that if trips are well organized, they can be very beneficial for everyone involved. But that means keeping groups small and strictly limiting tourists opportunities to take photos. There are operators who take tourists through slums as if they were going on safari, and experts say that these groups should be avoided.
