(International) Romney Wins by a Whisker in Iowa

He finished the night eight votes ahead of Rick Santorum.

The US presidential election took a big step forward last Tuesday with the Iowa caucuses. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, when all the votes had finally been counted, Mitt Romney was declared the winner by just 8 votes. Rick Santorum came second in the contest and Ron Paul finished a close third with just a few thousand less votes.

Romney had hoped for a comfortable victory that would send out a clear message that he was the man to lead the Republican Party against Barack Obama. That didnt happen, though, and Santorum, whose campaign has been run on a fraction of the budget Romney has had at his disposal, took votes from the more conservative Iowans.

Ron Paul was positive about his showing and told supporters: We will go onK. There is nothing to be ashamed of. Polls show that he was by far the most popular candidate with voters under the age of 40. Newt Gingrich finished the night in fourth, with Rick Perry fifth and Michelle Bachman sixth. Perry raised speculation that he might pull out of the race, saying that he was returning to Texas to think about his candidacy.
