(Politics) Putin Dismisses Allegations of Voting Fraud

The prime minister said that ballot stations at the upcoming presidential election could be monitored with video cameras.

Embattled Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin appeared on live TV last week to talk about claims that parliamentary elections had been rigged.

Although he accepted that people had a right to protest against the results of the election, he dismissed the notion that the vote had been manipulated. He also quickly brushed aside calls for the election to be held again.

Putins party lost seats in the election, but it was still able to retain a parliamentary majority. Many people in the country reacted angrily to this result, and 50,000 turned out in Moscow recently to demonstrate. The protests mark a political low for the prime minister, and they come just a few months before a presidential election that could see him return to Russias top job.

Putin remains resilient, and he laughed off criticism aimed at him, saying: The opposition is there to fight for power and is fighting for power. That is why it is seeking any opportunity to come closer to power, to edge the current authorities out, to accuse them, to point to their mistakes.
