The Chinese Journalists Association announced the winners of this year’s Cultural and Creative Industry Reporting Award and held the award ceremony on August 16. The award recognizes media professionals for their reporting and contributions to the development of cultural and creative industries. Taipei Broadcasting Station (TBS) host Mali Liu won the radio category for her program, Taipei Soundscape Series – Centennial Melodies. TBS’s commitment to and work in the cultural and creative industry have been recognized once again.

The “Cultural and Creative Industry Reporting Award,” organized by the Chinese Journalists Association, is dedicated to promoting the development of the cultural and creative industry. The award is divided into three categories: print and online, television, and radio, encouraging positive and high-quality journalism and enhancing social awareness and appreciation of the cultural and creative industries and of education. Following previous wins for Listening, Wandering – Urban Soundscape Artists (2024) and Taipei Soundscape Series – Portraits of Trades and Crafts (2025), TBS has once again secured this award, marking the station’s third consecutive year of recognition.

This year’s winner, Taipei Soundscape Series – Centennial Melodies, is a meticulously curated radio program. Host Mali Liu transforms into an “industry investigative reporter,” delving deep into Taipei’s century-long music cultural and creative industry chain. Breaking away from traditional production frameworks, the program utilized field recordings and in-depth interviews with professionals from the music scene, including record labels, live performance venues, and indie bands, to comprehensively map the city’s evolving soundscape.

 Comprising 13 episodes divided into three core themes, the entire series spans multiple eras and urban spaces. The first theme, “Memories of the West District,” traces the city’s musical journey from its origins during the Japanese colonial period, highlighting the National Taiwan Museum, love songs of Three-Line Road, and the legend of vinyl records, to early radio broadcasts by Taiwan Broadcasting Station and songs of social movements, ultimately extending to Ximending’s cabaret hall era and the youth chronicles of folk music cafes. “South Side Stories and Halls in Taipei”focuses on the new wave of indie bands emerging from Riverside Music Cafe while visiting heritage venues like Zhongshan Hall and the National Concert Hall, capturing the sounds of an era where historic architecture and modern concert halls intertwine. “Home Away from Home” explores the nostalgia evoked by Huangmei opera, the vibrant local soundscapes of Bangka Herb Lane and Longshan Temple, and the auditory observations of foreign musicians in Taipei. Blending in-depth industry research with the rich value of historical preservation, the series brings Taipei’s voice to audiences around the world.

TBS Director Shao-Chien Hu stated that Taipei Soundscape is one of the station’s flagship series, offering an innovative and nuanced perspective on the authentic and warm soundscape of Taipei City. The program guides listeners to rediscover the city’s profound heritage and infinite charisma through sound. By weaving together a rich urban soundscape and diverse natural and cultural elements, the program has created a dynamic “sound cultural heritage database,” reflecting the city’s century-long cultural texture and evolution. Among these, the Taipei Soundscape Series – Portraits of Trades and Crafts, Taipei Soundscape Series – Night Work Sketches, and Taipei Soundscape Series – Centennial Melodies are all highly recommended.
