The NTCH’s FormosART Tour throughout Northern, Central, and Southern Taiwan, Creating a Banquet Dedicated to the People

(中央社訊息服務20200923 17:30:45)Now in the sixth year since its inception, FormosART, hosted by the NTCH and supported by a multinational enterprise long dedicated to community investment, will tour northern, central, and southern Taiwan from October 17th through November 14th. On this tour, they will be performing the Taiwanese song and dance performance Bando (Twelve Courses of Taiwanese Cuisine Songs) at the following locations: Gueiren Renshou Temple in Tainan, the cultural campus of the Sintung Sugar Factory Culture Park in Taitung, Hu Guo Temple in Taoyuan, Checheng Fuan Temple in Pintung, and the Main Plaza of the NTCH. The performances will be free for all to attend. Bando is directed and written by Chung-Chi Fan, the current artist-in-residence at the NTCH, with the nationally-renowned caterer Ming-Can Lin serving as a consultant. The main roles are played by Lea Yong and Emerson Tsai, both nominees for the Golden Bell Award, playing the father and son in charge of the catering business. We welcome all to come and enjoy the party atmosphere.

FormosART combines performance art with service for the public welfare, providing performances with elaborate and impressive stories for patrons everywhere in the open air. With Maestro A-Chang's Radio Broadcast in 2014, Postcard in 2016, Starry Memory in 2017 & 2018, and now Bando, which originally premiered in 2019 and is now in its second year due to popular demand, FormosART has toured 14 counties and cities in a total of 24 performances, and reaching nearly 35,000 attendees throughout Taiwan.

Bando: An Onstage Feast Resplendent with Music, Songs and Dance, Drama, and Catering

According to Chung-Chi Fan, NTCH’s artist-in-residence, “the flavors of food can evoke memory and emotions.” For a gastronome like him, his dream is to create an authentic and touching musical that captures authentic Taiwanese cuisine. In order to infuse his play with a sense of the compassion and sincerity with which caterers from the 1930s and 40s prepared their dishes, Fan visited various locations throughout Taiwan in order to research the differences in the catering business across these different areas and also discover the reason why this business is disappearing. His quest was noticed by a national treasure, Ming-Can Lin, the third-generation heir of a family that has long been in the catering business, who agreed to join the production team as chef and consultant. Not only did Lin provide an encyclopedia’s worth of information about the methods by which some of the most iconic Taiwanese dishes are prepared, he also lent a chef’s perspective to Fan in the integration of these dishes with the play, such that attendees will understand the way of Taiwanese cuisine.

Taiwanese singer Lea Yong and actor Emerson Tsai, both nominees for the Golden Bell Award in 2020, were invited to star as the father and son chefs. Yong is able to demonstrate both his acting and singing talent in Mandarin, Taiwanese, and Japanese. Yong has worked closely with beloved musicians Sam Su and Jie Ruei Kang, and is known for his performance of famous classics Another Kind of Nostalgia, Sunset, Ue o Muite Arukō, and others. Emerson Tsai, who plays the son, also displays a unique charm onstage, with large numbers of fans showing up during the 2019 FormosART tour just to see Tsai’s performance. The richness of the Taiwanese dishes in Bando is put on full display with leading men Lea Yong and Emerson Tsai and the assistance of several young up-and-coming actors, including Yun-Ling Chen, Suzanne Hsu, Zhi-Yi Chang, Fu-Hsung Chang, Kuan-Hong Liu, and Sung En Chien. Together, the cast and crew have joined hands to hold a banquet celebrating the feast of life.

For our 2020 tours, the NTCH took the initiative in inviting the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City, the Cultural Affairs Department in Taitung County, Bureau of Cultural Affairs in Taoyuan City, and the Cultural Affairs Department of Pingtung County to serve as joint co-producers for Bando. Together, the production’s producers contributed their experience in production, marketing, and public relations to publicize the performance. This included a number of promotional activities and publicity to pass on information about these free performances to prospective attendees from all over northern, central, and southern Taiwan.
