The award-giving ceremony was held at the Conference Room of NCKU Library on December 23.
“It is a great honor to receive the award from the hands of NCKU Vice President Dr. Hong-Sen Yan,” said Yu who is the first recipient of Cheng Kung Chair.
This is the first Cheng Kung Chair to recognize the contribution from the industry to the academic, according to Dr. Yan.
He congratulated Yu and mentioned that NCKU established in 1931 and now a comprehensive university with nine colleges. “NCKU was ranked the 22nd place for Engineering subject in global universities.”
Yu who earned both bachelor of science and master of science degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from NCKU had also received 2014 NCKU Outstanding Alumni Award earlier this year
He is appointed general manager of Semiconductor -Global Accounts and president of Applied Materials Taiwan since 2009.
He was named account general manager of Memory and the United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) accounts in July 2007. Before this position, he was in charge of UMC and Taiwan Regional Account since November 2006, where he is responsible for growing market acceptance on advanced technologies for Applied Materials.
Mr. Yu first joined Applied Materials in 1993, as an account general manager, and later served as appointed vice president and account general manager of UMC from 2003-2006, leading the company to technological advancements in several tools including Blok and Oasis.
Prior to joining Applied Materials, Mr. Yu worked for OPTO TECH Corporation as a sales engineer. Mr. Yu is currently the vice chairman of Hsinchu Professional Managers Association as well as the head of Semiconductor Committee. He also is one of the board members of SEMI Taiwan PV committee.
