(International) Death Toll in South Koreas Ferry Disaster Passes 100

It has been more than ten days since South Korean ferry Sewol sank. The confirmed death toll is now 108, with 198 people still missing and only 174 survivors. Currently, authorities and non-government groups have sent hundreds of rescue boats to the area to search for survivors, as well as dozens of helicopters and 500 to 600 divers to join the rescue effort.

According to the investigation report released by local authorities, it was mainly the sharp turn the ferry made that caused it to capsize. However, it is bewildering as to why the crew members ordered the passengers to stay put in their cabins after the vessel started to tilt when, according to protocol, they should have asked them to go on the deck and board the lifeboats.

Additionally, several maritime experts have pointed out that in the event of an emergency on the open seas, passengers must put on life jackets at once, quickly go on the deck and wait for rescue. If the vessel has already been tilted and started to sink, they need to find an appropriate time to jump off it and swim at least 30 meters away from the vessel to avoid being sucked into a whirlpool if it sinks.
