Robert:

Diana:

Robert:

Diana:

(Health) Living Near Traffic Pollution May Increase Diabetes Risk

A recent Dutch study found something very surprising: people who live in areas with more pollution that was caused by traffic (namely air pollution) had higher risks of developing diabetes. Nitrogen Dioxide is a pollutant that is found in car exhaust fumes, and people who are more exposed to it, like those who live in urban cities, had a 4% increase in risk for developing diabetes than those who lived in more suburban or rural areas, where the air is cleaner and levels of Nitrogen Dioxide are much lower. Another surprising find was that people who seemed to be affected by the pollution more were those who were generally healthier overall.

Dialogue Example:

(Air Pollution) Diana and Robert are a couple. Robert is complaining about a persistent cough. Lets listen to their conversation.

Robert: Man, this cough just wont go away.

Diana: Ive noticed. Have you seen the doctor

Robert: Yes, I went today. He said its from my living environment, particularly the air pollution.

Diana: Well, thats not surprising. We do live in the city, and you ride a scooter to work. Sitting in all that traffic must be hard on your lungs.

Robert: Im kind of surprised, though, because he also said Im also very healthy otherwise. My coworkers, who smoke and eat junk food, arent really that affected by it.

Diana: Its probably because youre body is more sensitive to things that can hurt your health. Its a good thing, in a way.

Robert: True, but I dont know how much longer Ill be able to function with this cough.

Diana: I dont know. Perhaps we should move to the suburbs.
