(Technology) Unmanned Aircraft to Hit American Skies
Six sites were recently authorized in the US where unmanned aircraft can be tested.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) already approved drone use for uses such as law enforcement, surveillance, and atmospheric research, but now commercial uses such as delivering packages, crop spraying, catching animal poachers, etc. may now be tested for implementation in the future.
FAA administrator Michael Huerta recently stated, It provides the platform for this research to be carried out on a very large scale across the country.
Reaction to the news is mixed. Although many see the economic benefits to using drones, they are also concerned with privacy and safety issues. Catherine Crump, staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union in New York, voiced concerns with privacy issues stating, You can imagine a world in which it is impossible to walk out of your house without being subjected to persistent monitoring and recording by drones.
According to industry research firm Teal Group, investment and research into using unmanned aircraft is expected to nearly double to US$11.6 billion a year in the US by 2023. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) has predicted that unmanned aircraft could bring a potential US$80 billion and 100,000 jobs to the US economy over the next decade.
