"翁山蘇姬談及世界愛滋病日"
榮獲諾貝爾獎的緬甸反對派領導者翁山蘇姬,於世界愛滋病日發表言論,敦促人們對受到人類免疫缺陷病毒和愛滋病折磨的病患表達同理心。翁山蘇姬將她為了民主的艱苦奮鬥跟那些受人類免疫缺陷病毒和愛滋病折磨的人相比,表示:「對抗歧視是我們爭取免於恐懼的自由的延伸。」
聯合國愛滋病規劃署的米歇爾西迪貝點出,「在全世界各地造成如此嚴重損害的此種流行病」,其情形已經在改善,然而他說:「……污名、否認和自滿仍存在於我們之間,讓我們有使下一代失望的危險。」
根據聯合國指出,去年死於愛滋相關疾病的人數從2011年的180萬人降至160萬人。傳染病學教授及2014年世界愛滋病大會共同主席之一的雪倫理溫表示,全球對於愛滋病的反應已有了大幅進展,在25國中,回報新感染者的人數減少了50%。
翁山蘇姬和西迪貝推行了新的「零歧視」宣傳計畫,隨著零歧視日將設於2014年三月一日。
(International) Suu Kyi Marks World AIDS Day
Myanmars opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate, marked World AIDS Day by urging people to show compassion towards those afflicted with HIV and AIDS. Suu Kyi compared her struggle for democracy to the struggles of those afflicted with HIV and AIDS, stating that, The fight against discrimination is an extension of our fight for freedom from fear.
According to UNAIDS director Michel Sidibe, conditions are improving against, an epidemic that has wrought such staggering devastation around the world, however, ...stigma, denial and complacency are still among us, putting us in danger of failing the next generation.
According to the United Nations, 1.6 million people died from AIDS-related causes last year, down from 1.8 million in 2011. Sharon Lewin, an infectious diseases professor and co-chair of AIDS 2014, stated that global response to HIV has resulted in substantial progress, and in 25 countries a 50 percent reduction in new infections have been reported.
Plans for a new zero discrimination campaign were unveiled by Suu Kyi and Sidibe, with the launch of Zero Discrimination Day set to be March 1, 2014.
