(Technology) Android Phones 81% of World Smartphone Market
A new IDC study shows Android phones have hit more than 80% market share for smartphones shipments worldwide, and although Googles operating system has a stronghold, the Windows Phone is moving up the ranks.
A total of 261.1 million smartphones were shipped during the third-quarter, with 81% running Googles operating system, according to the new Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker by the IDC. A study by Strategy Analytics last month revealed similar statistics, showing that Android holds 81.3% of the global smartphone market.
Windows Phone shipments jumped 156% year-over-year, and while their global market share is less than 5%, they do illustrate that they are increasingly gaining in the world market. Nokia is the main smartphone choice for Windows Phones, as they made up 93.2% of all Windows Phones shipped in the third quarter.
Several smartphone manufacturers run the Android system, and of them, the Galaxy S4 ruled 39% of all Android smartphone shipments in the third quarter.
According to IDCs Mobile Phone Team research manager Ramon Llamas, Android and Windows Phone continued to make significant strides in the third quarter. Despite their differences in market share, they both have one important factor behind their success: price.
