(Health) Cancer Agency Encourages Patients to Exercise
The latest research shows that physical activity can seriously reduce a persons chances of dying from cancer.
The Macmillan Cancer Support agency last week advised that patients receiving cancer treatment should get at least 2-1/2 hours of exercise a week. The advice reflects the latest research conducted on fighting cancer and goes against the traditional view that cancer patients should go home and rest after receiving treatment. Experts at Macmillan are now saying that exercise can reduce the side-effects of treatment and lessen the risk of the patient dying.
Ciaran Devane, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, commented on the report, saying: Cancer patients would be shocked if they knew just how much of a benefit physical activity could have on their recovery and long term health, in some cases reducing their chances of having to go through the grueling ordeal of treatment all over again. The statistics show that exercise, which Devane says doesnt need to be anything too strenuous, can reduce the recurrence of breast cancer by 40%. It can also cut the chances of dying from prostate cancer by 30%, and doing 6 hours of exercise a week can slash a patients risk of dying from bowel cancer by 50%.
