(Life) Cooking Oil Found to Contain Illegal Additives

The discovery of illegal additives in the companys oil products is the latest in a series of food scandals that have rocked the country this year.

Taiwanese cooking oil producer Chang Chi Foodstuff Factory Co has been accused of adding illegal additives or other mixtures to its oil products. It is suspected that the companys olive oil products, marketed as 100 percent pure, have been mixed with sunflower oil, salad oil, camellia oil and the illegal additive copper complex chlorophyllin.

Since the purity of Chang Chis olive oil products was called into question, the company has been ordered to put all production on hold. Many of its products have also been pulled off store shelves, while raw materials and the companys accounting books have been seized as well. It is said that the oil maker could face a minimum fine of NT$28 million for the mislabeling of its products and its repeated efforts to avoid government inspections in the past.

In the wake of the incident, Chang Chi has attributed the flaw to a lapse in quality control, claiming that the production lines were originally used for sunflower oil and that other oils may have gotten mixed in during the production of olive oil.
