(Culture) Indian Brides Told to Give up Cell Phones
Use of the gadgets is apparently causing problems for many newlywed couples.
The Punjab State Commission for Women (PSCW) recently issued a directive telling newlywed women not to talk on their cell phones too much during the first 2 years of their marriages. The reason for the unusual advice was to prevent their husbands from getting jealous. Gurdev Kaur Sangha, who heads up the commission, said foregoing phone calls would help couples adapt to married life free from suspicion.
Sangha said the official advisory was necessary as he claimed almost 40 percent of women consider seeking a divorce on the grounds that their husbands and in-laws do not like them talking on mobile phones. He also said that most husbands said their wives are always on the phone and they doubted their character as they suspected them of talking to ex-boyfriends.
The commissions statement assured men that their brides would only be calling their families; it did, however, also warn women that calling home every hour would be damaging to their marriage. Sangha claimed that reports of domestic violence, sexual harassment, and family problems as a result of disputes over cell phone conversations are increasing, and his organization called on women to adjust slightly to create stronger marriages.
