(Culture) Pope Urges Less Focus on Moral Issues and More on Mercy

The pope has called for a new balance between its divisive rules and the need to be compassionate and welcoming.

In a recently published interview, Pope Francis criticized the Catholic Church for becoming obsessed with issues such as gays, abortion and contraception while neglecting its larger mission to be home for all. According to Francis, the church has the right to share its views, but not to interfere spiritually in the life of a person. He also stressed that a new balance between the churchs spiritual and political missions must be found or its moral structure will fall like a house of cards.

Whilst the pope did not express support toward gay marriage, abortion rights or contraception in the interview, saying that the churchs stance on these issues is clear, his message still signaled a significant shift in the tone of the Catholic Church.

Francis was elected pope earlier this year with the expectation that he would try to reform the Vatican, an institution which many believe has been torn apart by corruption and turf wars.
