(Health) Six-Year-Old Children Show Signs of Heart Disease

A new study shows that children who spend too much time in front of screens display the at-risk signals.

A shocking recent study has shown that 6-year-old children who spend long hours in front of the television or computer can display early warning signs of heart disease. Researchers from the University of Sydney found that young children who sit in front of screens for most of their leisure time have narrower arteries in the back of the eyes - an important indicator of future heart failure.

Over 1,400 6- and 7-year olds were tested in the study, and scientists discovered that the children who did the most physical exercise had, on average, retinal arteries that were 2.2 microns (1 micron = 0.001 of a millimeter) wider than those in the children who did the least exercise.

Dr. Bamini Gopinath, who led the research team, said of the results that this suggests that unhealthy lifestyle factors may influence microcirculation early in life and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and hypertension later in life.

He went on to add: Replacing one hour a day of screen time with physical activity could be effective in buffering the effects of sedentariness on the retinal microvasculature in childrenKFree play should be promoted and schools should have a mandatory two hours a week in physical activity for children.
