(Travel) Dubai Hangs On to Its Past
The states forward-thinking leaders are realizing the importance of history and heritage.
Dubai is known for its towering skyscrapers, luxurious hotels, and gargantuan shopping malls. Over the last few years, the emirate has almost entirely transformed and rebuilt itself, but there are still a few remaining traces of heritage and culture, and the states leaders are now doing everything they can to preserve them.
Bastakiya, a neighborhood in the Bur Dubai region of the city, was given heritage status in 1988 and is now one of the best places to experience old-world Dubai. Although only a handful of people still reside in the area, there are plenty of souks, or markets, in the neighborhood, which ensures that it is always lively. Vendors in the souks sell handmade rugs, clothes, and a host of other Arabian goods that would make for perfect souvenirs.
To try the local food, head to The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Its one of the few remaining places where you can still eat authentic Emirati dishes. A delicious brunch is served there every Monday and Wednesday morning before discussions are held on local culture. The nearby water taxi stops are a fantastic place to watch boats go back and forth across the waterway, just as they have done here for centuries.
