(Culture) Religion is Facing Extinction, Research Team Says

After looking at census information from 9 westernized countries, a research team has stated that in those nations, religion will one day be all but wiped out. They have arrived at that conclusion by applying a mathematical formula to the numbers of people who say they do not follow any religious beliefs. Dr. Richard Wiener from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement said that while real life is more complex than scientific models, these findings are still suggestive.

Talking about the mathematical approach used by the team, Wiener explained: It posits that social groups that have more members are going to be more attractive to join, and it posits that social groups have a social status or utility. The inference is that the utility of being a member of a religious group is relatively small.

The 9 countries examined in the study were Australia, Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Switzerland. Wiener did not appear surprised by the teams conclusion, commenting: In a large number of modern secular democracies, theres been a trend that folk are identifying themselves as non-affiliated with religion; in the Netherlands the number was 40%, and the highest we saw was in the Czech Republic, where the number was 60%.
