(Politics) Use of Chemical Weapons Near Damascus Inconclusive

The U.S. has been unable to conclusively prove the use of chemical weapons used in an alleged deadly gas attack near Damascus. The U.S. was part of a larger group, comprised of about 36, which have asked the United Nations to investigate the attacks.

The death toll from the event is estimated at between 500 and 1,300 V which could make it the worlds most lethal chemical weapons attack since the 1980s.

State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki stated, At this time, right now, we are unable to conclusively determine CW (chemical weapons) use. Psaki elaborated further, stating, If these reports are true it would be an outrageous and flagrant escalation of the use of chemical weapons by the regime, so our focus is nailing down the facts.

Without existing diplomatic relations to Syria, however, the U.S. faces several challenges in attempts to prove whether or not chemical weapons were used.

According to a White House statement made in June, if such weapons were to be used in Damascus, the American government would offer military aid to vetted groups of Syrian rebels. Such rebels have been fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad, and such an action would be seen as a strong political statement by the U.S. if undertaken.
