(Health) Can A Smartphone Eye App Diagnose Eye Problems
A new smartphone app is being tested in Kenya, reputed to be capable of diagnosing cataracts and other eye problems just as well, if not better, than hospital equipment.
Dr. Andrew Bastawrous, an ophthalmologist and researcher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, helped design the app and is currently testing the technology on 5,000 people in Kenya.
PEEK, the Portable Eye Examination Kit, has an app-based diagnosis tool with clip-on hardware, according to a website by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The app takes a retinal scan of an individuals eye, and the image is then transmitted to experts anywhere in the world. The portability of the device, which can store and save images for later transmission, means that remote areas would have access to proper exams and evaluation of eye impairments, hopefully leading to proper treatments.
The World Health Organization, WHO, states that about 285 million people worldwide are visually impaired. Of that number, 90% live in developing countries, with 80% being comprised of impairments that can be avoided or cured.
So far, testing seems promising, with Dr. Iain Livingstone of the Glasgow Centre for Ophthalmic Research stating he is, impressed.
