(Technology) Hype Over Hyperloop

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk released a statement saying the Hyperloop system may be available in 7 to ten years.

The Hyperloop system shortens the time required for railway travel significantly, having speeds of 800 mph. This means travelers would be able to go from places such as San Francisco to Los Angeles in about 30 minutes.

A prototype has not yet been developed, but developers say that the proposed San Francisco to Los Angeles train would have a cost estimated at about $6 billion.

Musk has been making a strong case for the Hyperloop system by making comparisons between it and the proposed California High-Speed Rail Project in a bid to implement the system as an alternative, saying, I dont think we should do the high-speed rail thing.

According to Musk, the problems with the proposed high speed rail include leasing land, structures needed to support the weight of the trains, and time and cost of creating a level path. In contrast, the Hyperloop system is lightweight and could follow most of the California Interstate 5 highway. Musk noted, Trains are amazingly heavy, and this is designed more like an aircraft.
