(Education) Children Read More from Screens

A UK survey shows that children are turning away from printed books.

The move towards a digitized world has been proceeding for some time now, and it appears that children in the West now prefer to read from a screen than a printed page. The UKs National Literacy Trust asked around 35,000 eight- to 16-year-olds about their reading habits, and the results showed that 52% preferred to read from screens. Only 32% preferred paper, while the remaining 16% had no preference or didnt read from either source.

While statistics show that much of this screen-based reading is connected to social networking sites, more and more children are choosing to read fiction from screens. About a third of the children surveyed read novels on computers, and smartphones. There is also evidence which shows that children often read factual information for homework assignments from screens rather than printed books.

The survey findings could have implications for the future of education. Textbook publishers are increasingly focusing on their digital content, and since it now appears that a digital device is a more natural tool for reading than a book, this trend should continue and even speed up in the coming years.
