(Entertainment) Christies Sets Auction Record

Experts suggest that collectors may be seeing art as a good investment.

At Christies in New York last week, a new record was set for the highest sales total in auction history. The sale of 70 pieces of contemporary art went for a combined US$495 million, with only four of the pieces finishing the event unsold. A total of 16 auction house records were set, as nine works went under the hammer for over $10 million and a further 23 sold for over $5 million.

The biggest sale of the night was Jackson Pollocks drip painting Number 19, 1948, which was bought for $58.4 million. Other notable sales included Roy Lichtensteins Woman with Flowered Hat, which went for $56.1 million, and Dustheads, which was created by Michel Basquiat and fetched $48.8 million during the sale.

Christies said the record sale reflected a change in the art market, and Brett Gorvy, who heads up the houses post-war and contemporary art division, said: The remarkable bidding and record prices set reflect a new era in the art market. Christies also noted that it was new buyers who were driving current sales.
