(Business) EU and Singapore Agree Free Trade Deal
The European bloc is trying to sign agreements with other Asian nations.
The European Union (EU) and Singapore have reached a deal on a free-trade agreement (FTA). Singapore is the second biggest Asian investor in the EU V it trails Japan V and trade between the two areas was worth 74 billion euros (US$97 billion) last year. The agreement has not yet been signed, but that is a formality and will be completed early next year.
The deal is expected to help EU carmakers export vehicles to Singapore and also give the 27-nation bloc access to the Asian city-states financial services sector. Syed Kamall, a British Member of the European Parliament, has been in charge of negotiations, and he welcomed the agreement, saying that Singapore is a massive and growing market and a key trade hub in Southeast Asia.
Despite the agreement being described by UK Prime Minister David Cameron as a gateway to other dynamic economies in Asia, the EU is trying to secure more FTAs with Asian partners. Talks are ongoing with other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members Malaysia and Vietnam. It also has an FTA with South Korea.
