(Education) US Christian Colleges Look to China for Students
Directors have found that many Chinese parents approve of their stricter rules.
With a struggling US economy meaning that student enrollment figures are down, some of the countrys smaller universities are increasingly looking to China for new students. For the schools, the advantages of looking to the east are obvious, as the Institute of International Educations Peggy Blumenthal explained: With the economic downturn in the U.S., schools are more eager to have international students at the undergrad level who are full fee-paying students.
Ivy League schools will always be attractive to international students, but Christian colleges are also doing well in China. Not only will they often accept students who arent quite good enough for the top schools, but they have also found that many Chinese parents appreciate the schools tougher stance on things like alcohol and sex.
Elizabeth Tanaka, who manages international recruitment for the Christian University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, explained that We tell parents we dont have alcohol on our campusK. People try to be a little bit nicer, treat people the way they would want to be treated. Commenting on the compulsory Bible classes many Christian universities have, she added that many people regard as an interesting part of US culture.
